In my dream children sing a song of love for every boy and girl
The sky is blue and fields are green and laughter is the language of the world
Then I wake and all I see is a world full of people in need

Friends,
Thanks to media hype about H1N1, several people who trust me have either approached or
called me to advice. The hype in media about the utility of face masks and N95
respirators as a tool for general protection against H1N1 can't be deplored enough.
Yesterday, a friend who listened wanted me to write down briefly what I advised so that
he could tell others in similar words. Hence this short email to friends whom I have
advised recently (and others whom I haven't yet).
Please realize that this is not an official advice, especially the one about face masks
or N95. Most N95 respirators are designed to filter 95% particulates of 0.3µ, while the
size of H1N1 virus is about 0.1µ. Hence, dependence on N95 to protect against H1N1 is
like protecting against rain with an umbrella made of mosquito net.
Tamiflu does not kill but prevents H1N1 from further proliferation till the virus limits
itself in about 1-2 weeks (its natural cycle). H1N1, like other Influenza A viruses, only
infects the upper respiratory tract and proliferates (only) there. The only portals of
entry are the nostrils and mouth/ throat/eyes. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's
almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N 1 in spite of all precautions.
Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to
prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections,
some very simple steps - not fully highlighted in most official communications - can be
practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):
为了防止扩散和第二次被感染的症状加剧与发展,在你还健康与没有任何H1N1
感染症状时,可以做下面的几个非常简单步骤(而不是聚焦于N95与"弹飞"
的囤积):
1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face
(unless you want to eat or bathe).
3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt).
H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate
and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way,
gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on
an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative
method.
4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt
water. Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to
clean nasal cavities), but blowing the nose hard once a day and swab bin g both nostrils
with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral

While Jack was paying for the necklace, he noticed a girl who looked like Sherry was standing across the street. When Jack rushed out the door, that girl was gone. |
|
Next day, Sherry was absent from class. No one knows where she was. Jack went to her house after school, but no one answered the doorbell. |
|
That evening, Sherry heard a voice calling for her outside the bedroom window and it was Jack who was holding a rose and a present. |
|
Jack raised the flower and necklace and yelled, "Happy Birthday, Sherry!" Sherry smiled and tears of happiness rolled down both her cheeks. |

The Old Fisherman
|

Our house was directly across the street from the entrance to a clinic. We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to outpatients at the clinic. One summer evening, as I fixed supper, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful-looking old man. "Why, he's hardly taller than my eight-year-old," I thought as I stared at the stooped, shriveled body. Most appalling, his face was lopsided from swelling, red and raw. Yet his voice was pleasant as he said, "Good evening. I've come to see if you've a room for just one night. I came for a treatment this morning from the Eastern Shore, and there's no bus until morning." He told me he'd been hunting for a room since noon but with no success. "I guess it's my face. I know it looks terrible, but my doctor says with a few more treatments..." |
|
|
I went inside and finished getting supper. When we were ready, I asked the old man if he would join us. "No, thank you. I have plenty." He held up a brown-paper bag. When I had finished the dishes, I went out on the porch to talk with him for a few minutes. It didn't take long to see that this old man had an oversized heart crowded into that tiny body. He told me that he fished for a living to support his daughter, her five children and her husband, who was hopelessly crippled from a back injury. He didn't tell it by way of complaint. Every other sentence was prefaced with thanks to God for a blessing. He was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease, which was apparently a form of skin cancer. He thanked God for giving him the strength to keep going. |
|
|
At bedtime, we put a camp cot in the children's room for him. When I got up in the morning, the bed linens were neatly folded and the little old man was out on the porch. He refused breakfast, but just before he left for his bus, haltingly, as if asking a great favor, he said, "Could I please come back and stay the next time I have to have a treatment? I won't put you out a bit, I can sleep fine in a chair." He paused a moment and then added, "Your children made me feel at home. Grownups are bothered by my face, but children don't seem to mind." I told him he was welcome to come again. |

Over the years he came to stay overnight with us, there was never a time that he did not bring us fish or oysters or vegetables from his garden. Other times we received packages in the mail, always be special delivery, fish and oysters packed in a box of fresh young spinach or kale, every leaf carefully washed. Knowing that he must walk three miles to mail these and how little money he had made these gifts doubly precious. When I received these little remembrances, I often thought of a comment our next-door neighbor had made after the fisherman left that first morning. "Did you keep that awful-looking old man last night? I turned him away. You can lose roomers by putting up such people." And maybe we did, once or twice. But oh, if only they could have known him, perhaps their illnesses would have been easier to bear. I know our family always will be grateful to have known him. From him we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude to God. |

Recently I was visiting a friend who has a greenhouse. As she showed me her flowers, we came to the most beautiful one of all, a golden chrysanthemum, bursting with bloom. But to great surprise, it was growing in an old dented, rusty bucket. I thought to myself, if this were my plant I'd put it in the loveliest container I had. My friend changed my mind. "I ran short of pots," she explained, "and knowing how beautiful this one would be, I thought it wouldn't mind starting in this old pail. It's just for a little while till I can put it out in the garden." She must have wondered why I laughed so delightedly, but I was imagining just such a scene in heaven. "Here's an especially beautiful one. He won't mind starting in this small, ugly body." But that's behind us now. Long ago in God's garden, how tall this lovely soul must stand! |

Goldilocks and the Three Bears
|
Once upon a time there was a little girl named Goldilocks. She loved to go walking in the forest.
One day she saw a strange house in the forest. "Anybody home?" asked Goldilocks.
|
|
|
|
|
There was no answer. She opened the door and looked inside. She did not know that it was the house of the three bears.
"That soup smells really good," said Goldilocks.
She went over to the table and saw three bowls of soup. First she tried Father bear's soup. "This soup is too hot," said Goldilocks. |
|
|
|
Then she tried Mother bear's soup. "This soup is too salty," said Goldilocks.
Finally, she tried Baby bear's soup. "This soup is perfect," said Goldilocks. Baby bear's soup was so good that she drank the entire bowl.
|
|
|
Goldilocks was feeling tired after drinking all the soup. She went in to the bedroom and saw three beds.
First she tried Father bear's bed. "This bed is too hard," said Goldilocks. Then she tried Mother bear's bed. "This bed is too soft," said Goldilocks. Finally, she tried Baby bear's bed. "This bed is perfect," said Goldilocks. It was so comfortable that Goldilocks fell asleep. |
|
Meanwhile the three bears came home from their walk in the woods.
"Someone has been tasting my soup!" shouted Father bear. "Someone has been tasting my soup!" shouted Mother bear. "Someone drank my entire bowl of soup!" shouted Baby bear. |
The three bears went into the bedroom. "Someone has been lying on my bed!" shouted Father bear. "Someone has been lying on my bed!" shouted Mother bear. "Someone is lying on my bed!" shouted Baby bear. |
|
|
|
|
 |
|
Just then, Goldilocks woke up. She opened her eyes and saw three angry bears looking at her. Goldilocks was very scared and ran all the way home. She promised herself never to go inside a stranger's house again. |
