Benson and Hedge, Two Smart Little Hamsters
Once upon a time there was two smart little hamsters named Benson and Hedge. They lived in a butcher shop owned by a man named Mr. O'Donald. Mr. O'Donald didn't pay much attention to Benson and Hedge. They had no cage - Benson and Hedge went anywhere in the shop they pleased. Mr. O'Donald would put out some bread crumbs for Benson and Hedge every now and then. But mostly Benson and Hedge were on their own, scrambling around looking for food and water. ![]() |

Unfortunately though, customers just didn't notice Benson and Hedge. And to a human, Benson and Hedge's yelling only sounded like "eeeeeh, eeeeeh." Outside on Mr. O'Donald's shop window, there were store signs that said "Pork Chop Special - $2.99 per Pound" and "100% Pure Grain Beef." One day, like many other days, a man stood outside the shop reading the store signs. Benson and Hedge had read the signs, too, and was watching the man. The man came in, looked at Mr. O'Donald, and said, "Where's the beef?" And Benson, who was very hungry by this time, said "Hey! Where's the grain?!" But of course he only sounded like "eeeeeh". Benson and Hedge knew by now they had to do something drastic to get attention. So Hedge decided to make a big sign, too. Hedge saw a big blue pen, and he found some poster paper scraps. He grabbed the pen, which of course is very long to a hamster, and wrote on the poster paper, "Our names are Benson and Hedge, please take us home to be your pet." Then they waved the sign all around in the air. The man saw something moving over to the side of the shop, and there were two little hamsters with the sign. The man knew that most hamsters can't read or write and thought this must be a trick. So he said to Mr. O'Donald the butcher, "Ray, you must be trying to get rid of your pet hamsters." Mr. O'Donald said, "Nah, the little guys just hang out here." ![]() |

Benson and Hedge knew this was their chance to be someone's pet. So Benson grabbed the blue pen, turned the poster paper over, and was about to write another message to the man, when the blue ink began to leak all over his paws and fur. The man stared at Benson, thinking this hamster had chewed on the pen, and he said "What a mess!" Thinking quickly, Benson wrote on the sign, "Pets Are Blue, Too!" And as the man realized these two hamsters could actually read and write, he began to get an idea. These little guys would make great pets! The kids would love them! With Mr. O'Donal's permission, the man scooped Benson and Hedge up, put them in a nice box, and took them to a pet store where he bought all the fancy little equipment hamsters need to be happy. At home, his kids cleaned off all the blue ink on Benson and gave them both a teeny little pen and a teeny little notebook. (The first question kids asked them was "What is your name?") From that time on, Benson and Hedge lived happily ever after with their new family. ![]() |
